Photos from Mayfest 2007, Corn Starch Demo in the Quad

This demo shows how some fluids can behave either as a liquid or a solid. When the cornstarch mixture (2 lbs cornstarch to 1 litre of water) is put under a blunt force, it behaves as a solid. When not stressed, it behaves as a liquid. Thus, one can walk on this fluid without sinking, amazing!
See a video clip from you-tube here!

SPS member: Tom Goldstein in orange shirt + two Mayfest enthusiasts!

SPS members Jess McIver and Andy Powers, and another cornstarch lover!

SPS Prez, Jess McIver servin' up some corn-starch to a couple of future physicists!

SPS member Andrew Powers explaining the physics of this non-Newtonian fluid. SPS member Tom Glodstein just behin Andrew.

SPS member Tom Goldstein, caught doing one of his classic areal moves of the day. SPS-er Andrew Powers on deck!

SPS member Tom Goldstein (left, orange shirt) and some of the high school physics enthusiasts!

SPS members: Andy Powers, Tom Goldstein, ??? and Jess MciVer, basking in the fun of the day!

Physics very own Patti Ford, taking the plunge!
