"How to get connected to the network when you arrive with a laptop"
There's only two options at this time...
The easiest way: Provide ethernet address ahead of time
In MS Windows 95/98/ME, you can
find your ethernet/mac address by clicking on START->RUN then type the
command "winipcfg"
Select your Network Interface Card
if it's not already displayed, and email the ethernet/mac address that's
listed to sysadmin@phy.syr.edu as well
as the dates you need it
In MS Windows 2000, you can find
your ethernet/mac address hidden away in Control Panel, Administrative
Tools, Computer Management, then look under System Tools->System Information->Components->Network->Adapter
email the ethernet/mac address
that's listed for your network card to sysadmin@phy.syr.edu
as well as the dates you need it
In unix you can run the command "ifconfig -a" and email the output to sysadmin@phy.syr.edu as well as the dates you need it
or
Manually set your IP address
We have an IP address reserved for
visitors.
However this method requires manually
changing your network settings both before and after arrival.
If you prefer this option, here
is the information:
make a note of current settings before making changes
Name: visitor.phy.syr.edu
IP address: 128.230.72.40
Gateway: 128.230.72.1
DNS Servers: 128.230.12.5
and 128.230.1.49
Please remember to change your settings
back so that it doesn't disrupt your network settings outside of our building.
If more than one computer attempts
to use this IP address, it could result in unknown collisions and duplication.
