Options for Email

If you have any other methods you wish to share with others, please let me know...

Best method locally:

Alternatives:
Use an email client that supports IMAP mail protocol (like Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird (compliment to Firefox browser), Netscape Messenger):

Using pine:

Forward your email to another account:

If you do end up with more than one account, perhaps you would rather consolidate email to one of them.

To forward your email that's coming into your SUnix/CMS Account, go to http://cms.syr.edu/email/aliasing/ and follow the instructions.

To forward your email that's coming into your Physics account, login and create a ".forward" file, the contents being the email you want it forwarded to. You can achieve this easily with this command 'echo email@yahoo.com > .forward'

Be sure to TEST your forwarding to be sure it works! (otherwise you may loose mail)

Also check the email in the account your having forwarded, as it will only forward NEW mail, not the existing contents!

Forward a COPY of incoming email to another account:

To forward a COPY of your email that's coming into your Physics account, login and create a ".forward" file, the contents being one line like the following example: \username,otheruser@hotmail.com

This will continue to receive mail into your Physics account AND send a copy to the address you specify.

Be sure to TEST your forwarding to be sure it works! (otherwise you may loose mail)

Web-based access to your mail (mailandnews.com):

try registering at www.mailandnews.com for web based email access anywhere
or new option of www.mail2web.com that appears quicker than the other

(may insert further instructions here in the future)

Get an account at www.hotmail.com or my.yahoo.com and setup to retreive your new messages using POP:

Signup for an account at www.hotmail.com (or any free email that supports checking other mailboxes)
For hotmail, login and click on "Pop Mail" on the right bar.
Create your settings similar to the following graphic:
Be sure to check the "Leave messages on server", otherwise, it will MOVE all of your mail to your hotmail account.
