Why should
you use the IMAP email server?
It's more robust and portable like
PINE, and handles graphics and attachments much nicer. You can log
in from work, from home, or on the road, and have access to all of your
email. Furthermore, it has not been exhaustively tested, but if you
are at a location that doesn't have graphics terminals, you should be able
to use PINE with a telnet session, and it shouldn't disrupt your IMAP setup!
(Please, if anyone tries this,
please
contact
me with any success stories or problems!!!)
Remote PINE?
Did you know that you do not have
to telnet to suhep to use pine? It's possible to use pine on another machine
and access your mail and folders on the main server. Currently, you can
access your folders remotely, but not your inbox. Watch for updates when
I make it available. If you are running Linux, I can tell you how to mount
your inbox.
Important note: do NOT use the POP3 email protocol while using IMAP. It will disrupt the way IMAP keeps track of your INBOX.
Installation
& Setup:
(If you already have Netscape Communicator
installed on your system, skip to step 3)
Step 1: Get the
latest Netscape Communicator
First, download the latest Netscape
Communicator from http://www.netscape.com/download/
Step 2: Install Netscape Communicator
Windows
Under the Windows Start menu, select
RUN and locate where you saved the netscape_communicator_pro_4.05_win95.exefile.
This should proceed with installing
the application. You should choose the Typical Installation
at the default directory if you are unsure.
If it prompts you whether you want
to move or copy your settings from a previous version, select move.
Linux
Identity:
fill in your your Name and email
address (username@phy.syr.edu).
Mail Server:
Mail server username: (use
your physics unix server login... ex: userone )
Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: smtp-host.syr.edu
and use authentication with your SU NETID
)
Incoming mail server: phy.syr.edu
Click and select IMAP (not POP3)
Click on More Options
Local mail directory
should be left as the default if you're not sure.
IMAP server
directory: mail
(In most
cases of those using PINE, mail is stored in a directory called "mail",
this will
automatically import all of your PINE folders to Netscape Messenger).
select Check for mail every 15
minutes (do not select if
using off campus)
select Remember my mail password
(only if this is your personal machine)
selecting this
allows anyone with access to that machine to read and retrieve email.
If you would
rather tighter security, do not select this option and you will be prompted
for a password every time you check mail.)
Step 4: New Email
Notification
If you would like a nice notification
of when new email arrives, and to have the system check for email, even
when Netscape is closed, see "New Email notification"
below.
At this point everything should
be setup. Close all Netscape windows. You can now start Netscape
Messenger, either through the start menu, or you can also start it under
the Communicator menu from Netscape Navigator. You will be
prompted for a password, this is the same password you use to get onto
the physics server for PINE. If you selected Remember my mail
password, this should be the only time you will need to enter it.
Step 5: Cleanup
Be sure to delete the original
install program, called netscape_communicator_pro_4.05_win95.exe
, otherwise, it will be unnecessarily using up space on your hard drive.
If you installed Netscape for Linux, the temporary files in /tmp automatically
get removed, and if you followed the steps, you should have removed the
tar file that you originally downloaded.
If you had a previous version of Netscape installed on your system, remove it by clicking on Windows 95 Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and select the OLD version of Netscape to remove.
Some versions of Netscape Messenger (the email component of Netscape Communicator) has this program under Netscape Communicator->Utilities->Netscape Mail Notification that displays a green arrow pointing at your inbox in the Component Bar to let you know when you have new mail waiting to be retrieved. The Component Bar is either "docked" at the right-hand end of the bottom of your Communicator window or "undocked" in a small window on your screen. The green arrow will appear when you have new unread mail, and disappear after you've retrieved your new mail.
Click on the green arrow or the inbox icon to open your Messenger window, then click the "Get Msg" button at the top of the window to retrieve your new messages.
If you are running Netscape Communicator on Windows, you will find a program named "nsnotify.exe" or alternatively if you click on the Windows 'Start' button and go through these menu choices:
Programs
Netscape Communicator
Utilities
and select "Netscape Mail Notification". If you run this program, it will put a 'letter' icon at the right-hand end of your Windows task bar. When new mail arrives, it will play a sound to alert you and also display a notification icon. You can click on the icon with your second (right) mouse button to customize how this program notifies you of new mail.
To enable this every time you start
your computer, you will need to add a shortcut to your Start Menu Programs.
Click on Start -> Settings ->
Taskbar
Click on the Start Menu Programs
tab at the top of that window.
Then click the Add button
If you installed netscape in the
location it chose for you, type: "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\nsnotify.exe"
otherwise, you will have to use
browse
to locate the program nsnotify.exe
How to change the
sound notification:
Netscape uses the sound settings
in Windows 95.
To change those settings, click
on Start, then Settings -> Control Panel
Then click on Sounds.
Go down to New Mail Notifcation
and select it.
You can change the sound where
it says Name: by using the menu scroll arrow to the right of the
name. Otherwise, you can use the browse button to tell it to look
somewhere else.
Any custom sound files you use, should be copied to your C:\Windows\Media directory
Here's some email notifcation sounds
you may like to use:
"Your
electronic messages have arrived" (click with right button to save)
"Master,
I have mail for you (I Love Genie)"
"You've
got post"
"You've got
mail"
"What's
this? A letter... for me. (Bugs Bunny)"
"Jetsons
Music"
"Proirity
one message from starfleet coming in on secure channel (Star Trek)"
Additional help on setting up and using Netscape Messanger
Netscape
help on Messanger
(if this help doesn't display,
then you installed Netscape somewhere other than the default location,
in this case, select Help->Help
Contents, click on About Messenger in the left column, then
click on Using Messenger in the window)
Rename the AIM directory under the
netscape directory to anything else
(usually at /Program Files/Netscape/Communicator/Program/AIM)
Use /Windows/regedit.exe to delete
the following keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppPAthes\aim.exe
......
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21.............\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\AOL Instant Messanger .......
(or you can do a search for AOL and AIM, but be careful not to delete anything other than these)
