The printer monitors the timing of four sensors to determine that a paper jam has occurred: PS2, PS1, PS1403, and PS1402. If a paper jam occurs, the printer displays a 13.x PAPER JAM message on the control panel.
Most paper jams occur in the following locations (see Figure 1):
Figure 1: Paper path jam locations

NOTE: Open and close all printer covers to clear the paper jam message. After removing a sheet of paper, check other areas to ensure that all paper has been removed.
When a sheet of jammed paper becomes badly shredded, it is a good idea to carefully piece all parts together to ensure that no small parts are overlooked. All portions of a jammed piece of paper must be removed or repeated jams might occur.
If the jam persists, try the following:
NOTE: The HP LaserJet 5Si HM supports 20- to 53-pound bond paper from Trays 2, 3, and 4. The HP LaserJet 5Si HM also supports index paper (up to 110 pound media) from Trays 2, 3, and 4. When using 16 pound media, the fusing mode can only be STD PAPER. Otherwise, overheating of media will cause performance issues such as paper jams.
Status messages communicate the current state of the printer. When the printer is ready and not busy, the control panel will display some form of a ready condition. When the printer is performing a function, such as an engine test, the control panel will display a status message. When the function execution is complete, the control panel will again display the ready condition message. The printer's control panel displays all device status messages in the selected display language unless you have stated otherwise. The following table lists status messages in alphabetical order:

13.x PAPER JAM CLEAR 1 PAGE |
This message appears when a paper jam
occurs anywhere in the paper handling system, including both the 2000-sheet
tray and the multi-bin mailbox. The entire paper path must be cleared before
the printer can continue printing. The "n" represents how many
pages are inside the print mechanism. |
Clear the jammed paper. To return the printer to a Ready state, open and close the top printer door (the door that allows access to the toner cartridge). |
|
CLOSE PRINTER COVER |
The printer's cover is not firmly closed. |
Ensure that the top door is firmly closed. |
|
INPUT DEVICE FEED PATH OPEN |
This message indicates that an optional input device is disrupting the input paper path. For example, the feed door is open on the 2000-sheet tray. |
Ensure that all doors are closed, especially the feed door on the 2000-sheet tray. |
|
INPUT OPERATION CONDITION x.yy |
This message indicates that an optional
input device has a condition that needs to be corrected before printing can
resume. (Where x is the defined device and yy is the error code.) Device is
defined as: |

TONER LOW |
The toner cartridge is low on toner. The printer behaves according to the setting for the menu item TONER LOW. It either stays Online and continues to print or it goes offline and stops printing. |
Replace toner cartridge. |
Error messages communicate errors that prevent the printer from completing a print job. The Auto Continue setting affects all errors in this category (with the exception of 41.3 IMPROPER PAPER SIZE). If the Auto Continue setting is on when an error occurs, the error message will display, and the printer will go offline for ten seconds before returning to an Online state. If Auto Continue is off, the error message will remain on the display until you press the Select key, turn the printer off and restart it, or have the printer serviced (depending on the error and the situation).
