External Email Security

Can't send mail out anymore?
Continued exploits on vulnerabilities has forced us to upgrade the mail server software.

Which means in general, that you cannot use the physics server as your outgoing mail server unless you are connected to the Syracuse University domain.

What other routes do you have?  In most cases, you can use your internet provider mail server, while still "acting" like the mail is coming from where-ever you specify.

It may be a little confusing, so if you have any questions, email me.

Setting your Internet Service Provider's (ISP) email server

If you are using Netscape Messenger for mail, the capture below shows where you would change your outgoing mail server.
Your incoming mail server should remain the same.  If you are using Road Runner, their email server is: SMTP-server.twcny.rr.com
If you are using a different internet provider, you should consult that company's support for the correct address.

I'm sorry if this becomes an inconvienence, but it has become a necessary evil, and almost all servers are moving this way.
If left open, unscrupulous internet users exploit our server by using it to send thousands of commercial junk mail (spam).
Because of the widespread problem of mail servers being left open, there is an organization that maintains a database of "insecure mailservers".  Once listed in that database, many sites will block email from that entire domain, making the changes in our policy necessary.

PS- If you ssh or telnet into the server and use pine, that is considered "within SU", so the limitations shouldn't apply.
