PHY567 Revision Topics -- Quiz II
- Abstract Quantum Formalism:
- Know about bra and ket vectors, dot products and operators.
- Know what an eigenvalue problem is.
- Be able to prove that hermitian operators have real eigenvalues
and eigenvectors which form an orthogonal set.
- Know the generalized statistical interpretation of
Quantum Mechanics - that the results of a measurement of a physical
observable are one of the corresponding (hermitian) operator's eigenvalues and
the probability of finding that value is the absolute value squared of
the dot product of the state vector with the corresponding eigenvector.
- Know the form of the generalized uncertainty product.
- Matrix mechanics:
- Know how to take dot products of the abstract Schroedinger equation in
a given basis to reduce it to a matrix equation - know the meaning of
the matrix elements and column vectors in terms of generalized dot
products.
- Know how to solve simple 2 dimensional matrix eigenvalue problems.
- Know simple facts and features about angular momentum in Quantum
Mechanics
You will be asked for simple definitions of concepts and
quantities and simple problems will be given. I will try to avoid heavy
algebra. You will have the whole class period.
