Week 1 -- Week 3
Introduction to HTML and Java. How to create a homepage, and embed Java applets on your Web pages. Compiling and setting permissions. Introduction to the simplest examples of chaotic systems - bacteria in a jar - the logistic map.
Week 4 -- Week 7
Period doubling as a route to chaos. Fixed points of a chaotic map - strange attractors and fractals. Java classes and simple Java graphics.
Week 8
Midterm exam
Week 9 -- Week 12
2D Maps, examples from globular clusters. Julia sets and the Mandelbrot set. Multifractals. Examples in Nature. DLA growth. Chaos in the Solar System. More Java experience - designing a GUI for running simulations. Billiard balls.
Week 13 -- Week 14
Earthquakes and anything else we have time for ...
