PHY211 Spring 2010

Information on Electronic Clickers

You are required to purchase an i>clicker remote for in-class participation. i>clicker is a response system that allows you to respond to questions I pose during the lectures, and you will earn bonus credit for that participation. They are available from the SU bookstore. Don't forget to use mail-in rebate you get with a purchase of the new textbook to recover part of the cost. Used clickers are fine, but you can't share them with any students in the PHY211 class, since each clicker can be associated with only one student. Each clicker has a unique serial number on the back of the remote. Place a piece of scotch tape over that bar code and ID to preserve it. In order to receive credit for your participation, you will need to register your i>clicker remote at the registration page following this link. The i>clicker response system will be used at every lecture, and you are responsible for bringing your remote with you. We do not give credit for missed classes (even when absence is justified), forgotten or broken clicker etc.

If you have a used i>clicker and you cannot decode its ID anymore, please approach the instructor. He has a program which will decode your clicker ID electronically.

Please notice that we are not using the registration procedure provided by the manfucturer, thus registration with their web site is not needed and will not earn you any credit.

Using the i>clicker

Pull the plastic tab from the back of the new remote before use to activate batteries. Switch the clicker ON. The blue POWER light should be on. If it is blinking switch it OFF and ON again. Press key corresponding to your response (usually A, B, C or D). Participation credit is not based on whether your answers were right or wrong. However, you will earn no credit for sending an answer which is out of valid range (e.g. E when choices were A,B,C,D). Green VOTE STATUS light will turn on briefly to indicate that your input was accepted. If you send another response to the same question, the same light will blink in red. You can switch the clicker off in between the questions.
